St. John's Fort

St. John's Fort was constructed by the Dutch in the 18th century and was once a private chapel dedicated to St. John the Baptist. The interesting features that should be paid attention, is the cannons in the fort that are faced inland instead to the sea. The view from the top of the hill where St. John's stands is particularly for the fantastic tropical sunset that consistently builds great valuable experiences.

The King's Well (Hang Li Po's Well)

King's Well was built in 1459 by the followers of Princess Hang Li Poh as the main source of water supply in the town. Being the oldest well in Malaysia, it is said that the well will never dried up, not even during times of extreme drought.

Upon conquering Melaka in 1511, the Portuguese secured the well and hence gained total control of the well to serve as one of their main sources of water supply. In retaliation, Sultan Mansur Shah seek help from the Javanese and the well were filled with poison and many who drank from it died of poisoning. According to Portuguese historian, Diogo de Couto, many Portuguese soldiers died from drinking the water from the well.

After the Dutch conquered Malacca in1677, they surrounded the well with solid brick walls in bid to safeguard the well and prevent it from being poisoned again and maintain their rights over it and to. The wall surrounding the well erected by the Dutch is still present today.

The enterance gate of the museum. Plastis bag will be given with the ticket after the vistors paid for their ticket at here.

There is also an interesting note for  visitors to the museum that visitors have to take off their shoes when you get into the "palace". I think it's the only museum in Malaysia that does that. Visitors will be given a plastic bag if they want to carry their shoes into the museum instead of leaving their shoes outside. It is also the only Museum in Malaysia which does that.

A’Famosa Fort

A’Famosa Fort
Inside A'Famosa.
A’Famosa Fort is a famous langmark in Melaka. The "A Famosa" actually means "The Famous" in Portuguese and this is one of the oldest surviving remnants of European architecture in Asia. As such an old remnant,it has a long and interesting history to tell.

In 1511 a Portuguese fleet arrived under the command of Alfonso de Albequerque. His forces attacked and successfully defeated the armies of the native Sultanate. Moving quickly to consolidate his gains, Albequerque had the fortress built around a natural hill near the sea. Albequerque believed that Melaka would become an important port linking Portugal to the spice trade from China. At his time other Portuguese were establishing outposts in such places as Macau, China and Goa, India in order to create a string of friendly ports for ships heading to China and returning home to Portugal.

The fortress once consisted of long ramparts and four major towers. One was a four-story keep, while the others held an ammunition's storage room, the residence of the captain, and an officers' quarters.

As the plan below shows, most of the village clustered in town houses inside the fortress walls. As Melaka's population expanded it outgrew the original fort and extensions were added around 1586. Throughout this time, the walls of the fort repeatedly withstood large attacks by native elements.

The fort changed hands in 1641 when the Dutch successfully drove the Portuguese out of Melaka. The Dutch renovated the gate in 1670, which explains the logo "ANNO 1670" inscribed on the gate's arch. Above the arch is a bas-relief logo of the Dutch East India Company.

The fortress changed hands again in the early 19th century when the Dutch handed it over to the British to prevent Melaka from falling into the hands of Napoleon's expansionist France. The English, knowing that they would have to return the fort to the Dutch at the end of the Napoleonic wars, were determined to make the city as useless to the Dutch as possible. They planned to relocate the population and demolish the fort. This nearly happened, but Sir Stanford Raffles (the founder of Singapore) persuaded the English to let the residents remain and also prevented the total obliteration of the fort by convincing the English to let one gate remain for history's sake. It is quite possible that in doing this, Raffles spared the remaining historical monuments of Melaka as well.

For History Story lovers, A'Famosa Fort is a place MUST visit when you go to Melaka.

Special note for GIRLS: When there is no crowd, this place is also a nice choice to take photo of OOTD. ;)

St. Paul's Church

St Paul's Church locates on the top of St Paul's Hill which was originally named as Malacca Hill. Long time ago, it was a chapel and was known to the Portuguese in Malacca as the Chapel of Mother of God. The current address of the location is Jalan Kota, Bandar Hilir, 75000 Melaka.

It is a famous landmark in Maleka. It may take some time to climb to the church especially during hot weather day. However, even it is exposed during climbing to the church and it actually has been ruined, it is still attractive.

Tn the grounds of St. Paul’s is a marble statue of St. Francis Xavier that was built in 1953. The first thing you notice is that the saint is missing his half of his right arm. St. Francis Xavier was a Catholic missionary who translated the Bible into Malay and was a pioneer in spreading Catholicism across Southeast Asia. During his lifetime it was said that he performed several miracles. He died 1552 and his body was temporarily placed in a burial vault here for nine months. In December 1553 his remains were moved to Goa in India.

The marble statue of St. Francis Xavier.
His right forearm was used during his lifetime to bless and baptize his converts. In 1614 this was detached by Priest Gen.Claudio Acquaviva so it could be shipped to Rome. This was to allow the Pope to canonize (make a saint) St. Francis Xavier. Legend says that a miracle occurred and blood began to drip from the wound.

And there is an interesting story behind this marble statue.

The current white marble statue was installed on 22nd March, 1953 to commemorate pioneering missionary work across Southeast Asia while based at Melaka from 1545 to 1552. The next day a large Casuarinas tree fell and snapped off St. Francis Xavier’s right arm! So he has lost his right arm twice!

St. Francis Xavier Church

St. Francis Xavier Church was once the largest church built by the Paris Foreign Missionary (also known as Missions étrangères de Paris or MEP) in the Malay Peninsula. The church was believed to be modelled after the Cathedral of St. Peter in Southern France, Montpellier, which followed closely the older church’s original construction, except for a portico which was later added in 1963.

To date, St Francis Xavier Church still serves its function as a Catholic church, with regular mass services being held from time to time. Having been around for more than a century, the church’s structure now leans slightly to the left.
